Learn about the African Elephant

The African elephant is the largest living land animal. Males average about 10 feet in height and weigh an average of 11,000 pounds.  Elephants spend a lot of time eating (clearly!); they can eat up to 300 pounds of food and drink up to 50 gallons of water in one day!

From dense forests to open plains, these elephants can live in almost any habitat that provides plenty of food and water. An elephant’s trunk is a long nose that is used for breathing, smelling, drinking, making noises, and grabbing objects.

Environment

African elephants are primarily found south of the Sahara Desert, though smaller African forest elephants tend to live in Central and West Africa.
